Papa's Scope, Chapter 2
Part 4: The Dreams
Kaelyn still had the nightmare regularly and each time it was frustratingly identical. Try as she might she could not affect the outcome – she drifted above the town, she saw the darknesses writhing, and they drew her in. Each time she would struggle, thrash, try to shout – nothing worked. That one tentacle, noticing her, would stretch up and reach for her and just as it seemed about to grasp her she would wake, trembling and sweating. When she had the dream now, the whispers would linger for the whole day, just out of the reach of her consciousness. She could hear them – feel them – slithering behind her thoughts, but she could not make out any words she understood nor any meaning other than menace and malice.
As terrible as it was, that nightmare was nothing compared to the new dream; it had started only recently, two months after Papa Greene died. In it, she was sitting in his living room. Everything was just the way it had been the

Papa's Scope, Chapter 1
Part 1: Out, Brief Candle
When Kaelyn got home from school on the afternoon of her sixteenth birthday, she knew immediately that something was wrong. To start, her mother was home – and Mom worked late during the week; she had only come home to the dark green Lexus in the driveway a handful of times since they moved to Massachusetts, and every time meant something awful had happened. Then, when she went inside and saw that all of the lights were off, and that her parents were huddled together on the couch, Mom sobbing in Dad's arms, her skin went cold.
Looking up, his hand still stroking his wife's back, Cameron Greene's pained eyes met his daughter's. “Kaelyn... Papa Greene is dead, honey.” At the words, she dropped her schoolbag on the floor in the middle of the room and collapsed against the couch at their feet as the sorrow in his voice and the weight of the news dragged her down as surely as a stone around her neck.
No, it ca'n't be. He ca'n't be gone.

The Trackless Desert, Chapter 4: The Prince
Ailin looked up at the burning sun, high over their heads, as she pushed her damp bangs back from her face for the fiftieth time this morning. She was kneeling in the burnt, brown grass around the cottage with a hammer in one hand and a handful of nails in the other, carefully assembling trellis frames which would support the forest-pea plants. She had decided that this could not be put off any longer, and that one day without watering would be less harmful to the plants than to be allowed to languish in the dirt.
As she worked, she looked over at Auntie Nem. The old woman was carefully erecting the finished trellises over the rows of plants, gently twining the curled tips of the vines into the wooden structure, ensuring that they would grow and grip tightly. The pods, when they came in the fall, would be full and heavy, and the plants needed to hold their weight lest they be destroyed by the cold ground of the dark seasons. The young woman smiled to see her still so strong and deft, e

The Trackless Desert, Chapter 3: Wingboy
It had been almost two months since the planting, and it had not rained once. The summers were always hot and dry here in the forest, so close to the savannah, but it had never gone for so long without so much as a drop for as long as Ailin could remember. Even the stream was feeling the effects, less than half its usual depth remaining, its waters muddy and sluggish instead of the clear and swift torrent it so often was. Auntie Nem said that this meant the mountains, too, were not receiving their rains. Ailin wasn't sure if she believed her – the mountains were almost a hundred miles away, after all, and it seemed unthinkable that something so far away could affect their little stream, but the old woman was so wise and had never, as far as Ailin had ever known, been wrong.
So, she walked dozens of trips to and from the stream every day, the yoke and the buckets her constant companions. She had devised a way to fold a cloak to make a pad to keep the wood from rubbing her shoulder

The Trackless Desert: Even Heroes Lose Their Way
The summer had been long and abnormally hot this year. The sun hung high above their heads, its fierce blazing seeming to bleach the blue from the sky just as it sucked the moisture from the soil of their small garden and reddened their skin.
Exhausted from the work of turning the soil to ready it for the midsummer planting, Ailin wipes the sweat from her brow with the hem of her simple cotton sundress, oblivious to the immodesty of such a motion – after all, there was no one this far from the towns, no one but herself and Auntie Nem of course. The girl – more a young woman now, as she neared fifteen winters – looked over at the comfortable rocking-chair set under a shady tree nearby, where the old woman napped through the heat, and smiled.
To pass the time as she toiled, she began to recite to herself one of the stories she had heard so many times, one brought to mind by the heat of the sun and the feeling of the earth crumbling in her hands and under her toes. So fo

The First Winter, Chapter 3: The Nighttime Dragon
On the first day of Spring, Ailin woke with the dawn and the loud cracking sound of the ice in the river breaking apart, followed by the rushing noise as the water began rushing to make up for the time lost while it was frozen. She rushed outside, seeing that nearly all of the snow had melted, and that the first shoots of the brave flowers were poking up through the last of the winter's white.
When Auntie Nem finally woke, somewhat later than that, she found that the table was already set for breakfast, and that Ailin had not only decorated the house with fresh flowers, but also prepared their morning porridge. Surprised and pleased, she asked the young girl, “To what do I owe this wonderful surprise, Ailin? It is not like you to rise early and do work without being asked!”
Giggling, the girl eagerly lead her grandmother to her place at the table and then plopped herself down on her chair. “I want you to finissh the story of the First Winter! The snow and the ice are

I am a writer, a gamer, a geek, a scifi and fantasy fanatic, a DM, a GM, and speaker for Friend Computer.

I can pilot a Stabber Fleet Issue cruiser and a Deep Space Science Vessel, Intrepid Class with equal skill.

I might drain your vitality and your very soul with Affliction, or I might just run you through with a Blade while taking shots at you with an Assault Rifle.

I've flown too high and dug too deep, and I'd do it all again in an instant.

Too many memories!

"Dammit! Nurse! Get some paralytics STAT! She's siezing!"

"Catch her! Catch her!"

i guess this isnt going to be one of the easy times

Again, words then lights. Much easier to see now.

"Hey, there! We're glad to see you're finally stable."

White coat; doctor. Look around, beds, wires, tubes, cloning facility. Nurses. Only patient.

Back to white coat, but he's gone. Turn to ask nurses where he went. Gone.

Alone. Naked.

Freezing. So cOldcoldcold…

Then, ice and calm spreading from my right arm.

Breathing slows; eyes open.

As the last few shreds of the dream fade, my whole life in a second, again. Same as every time. Just gotta ride the wave and enjoy the memories.

The price we pay for immortality: Terror, pain, and remembering.

There it is; the dark horizon of sleep. Tomorrow the mind will be settled, the computers updated, the new ship prepared. Tomorrow…
